Luxury Adventure Travel Destinations

Abercrombie & Kent is one of the world's leading luxury travel companies, "combining comfort and authenticity in the world's greatest destinations since 1962". Back in those days of the 60's cultural and luxury adventure travel was the reserve of the affluent traveler, not the modern day tourist.

Adventure is, in my mind, about discovery and learning. Discovering a new place, a new culture, discovering nature and the world is my adventure. It has not always been that way. As a teenager I hitch-hiked the Caribbean with $ 100 US in my pocket. The challenge was to make it to the island on trading schooner and the occasional hitched run on a luxury sailing yacht.

At 20 my holidays were active mountain trekking and river surfing. That is still true for many adventure seekers, but extreme activities are not for all.

The true mountain climber is on a quest to conquer. Luxury is not a consideration when climbing Everest. Climbers sleep in a tent on the edge of a cliff with wind howling thought it. I know of one man who spent 10 days in a tent on an Iceland glacier, through wind and snow that are not for the faint of heart. One wind storm on the edge of the Glacier tore the paint of a car that was abandoned there. The wind had picked up volcanic ash and grit giving the car a full Exfoliation. Not your typical luxury Spa treatment with Microfiber, Pumpkin Peel, Glycolic and Salicylic Acid . Nature's Volcanic ash and gravel Exfoliation, would be terminal. Some adventures can be just too extreme.

Luxury adventure is not about conquest or extreme. It is more about discovery and learning while travelling in style. You may want to ride bare back on an Elephant and stay in a jungle hut. But you demand some comfort, fine food and a touch of luxury, a spa, a lounge, a bar and tea at 4 on the seaside terrace, if you please!

Outdoors Adventure Travel in Style

Comfort and style is the point of luxury adventure travel and the luxury adventure holiday, regardless of the destination. In the Kejimkujik island camp in Nova Scotia, park attendants motor out to island tent site and prepare it for the campers. Firewood is stacked and ready. I think soon their may be a service to stock an icebox at some island campsites, but then camping must provide some extreme to be an authentic experience. Still its an idea with merit for many. The fishing lodges in Northern Canada are already catering to the very affluent travelers, combining outdoor adventure with comfort and 5 star services.

The latest trend is luxury in outdoor setting. Jungle Bay Hotel and Spa in Dominica sets your room in the tops of trees, furnishing is sparse but elegant and spotless and the sense of the outdoors and jungle is very real. Your shower is outdoors hung between branches, private with an amazing view through an eye level porthole in the bamboo siding. Days are filled with jungle treks and rain-forest explorations. At the end of the day dinner is a gourmet experience. The staff are trained by top French chefs, waiters and hoteliers. Several of these professional are in attendance to ensure all is up to top international standards.

Extremes in style happen too on the luxury African Safari adventure holidays where Jungle meets privilege. Tents are palaces of comfort; nothing is spared to make your dining experience exceptional. Who wants to be rugged always? Comfort is better when you rough it, and the outdoor experience all the more extreme and enchanting when you experience it in contrast to a 5 star hotel

Make your next trip an Adventure Holiday.
